Acceptance

When I was younger, these dolls were banned from my house. My dad was afraid that I would develop an eating disorder and body issues. I mean, look at them…they are perfect. Each one has long, glossy hair, perfect boobs, a tiny waist, curvy hips with a tight butt and incredibly slender legs. Who wouldn’t be jealous of their bodies, even if they are practically impossible to attain and simply unreal?

So instead I played with…

And who knows if it was the absence of a perfect standard to live up to (Thank you, Dad, for your incredible foresight.) or just by sheer luck, but I have come through life with an amazing amount of self-confidence.

Don’t get me wrong…there have definitely been times that I wasn’t too happy with my body. When an 8th grader wakes up one morning and all of a sudden has birthing hips and is forced to shop in the women’s section, where her only options are pleated pants, life isn’t too optimistic.

But I have grown and changed and thankfully there are A LOT more clothing options for curvy women. It makes me so sad to hear women, especially my friends, say cruel things about themselves. Especially since these things are grossly untrue. My friends are GORGEOUS! But they complain about their boobs being too small/butts too big/cellulite/arms too flabby/no jawline/torso too short or too long/legs too short, etc.

Let’s put a stop to this. Let’s celebrate who we are and what we like about ourselves. I encourage you to write down three things (or more) that you like about your body. For me, I wrote:

1. I like my strong, runner calves.

2. I love my hair.

3. I love my freckles.

Force yourself to see the positive and hopefully this will change our views on ourselves. Because, let’s face it, none of us are Barbie, but we are ALL beautiful in our own special ways. :)

Happy Friday!

My Mommy

My mother doesn’t always agree with my fashion choices or the way I put outfits together, but there are so many things I have learned from her. My mother taught me:

-how to put colors together. (She has an amazing understanding of colors and complimentary colors.)

-to appreciate my body and wear things that compliment me.

-to be confident and not care what other’s think of me.

-to dress appropriately and modestly.

-how to accessorize (she’s got an awesome collection of jewelry).

and

-to shop the sale rack and look for good deals.

I am so thankful for my mother that loves me no matter what I’m wearing. I hope that someday I can have a girl someday to pass on all of my fashion knowledge. Happy Mother’s Day to all you moms out there! :)

Happy Friday!

Change.

Change is good. But it’s also super scary because it takes us out of our comfort zone and puts us into a new, possibly uncomfortable, place. Even if the change is for the better, it is still nerve-wracking.

But change is important to experience new things and to move us towards our best self. Especially in fashion.

Not changing can result in dating you. We’ve all seen that lady who is STILL rocking the Farah Fawcett haircut she had in high school.

Imagine if I kept wearing the same outfits I had in high school. Yikes. I changed from that silly, naive girl and will continue to grow and change as the years go by.

Last Friday, I got my bangs cut short by the lovely Jenni at Envision Salon. This scared me to death to do because I was afraid it would make me look like a twelve-year-old (or like Harriet from Small Wonder…remember that show?). I am super happy with the results and thankful I don’t resemble a jr. higher. ;)

I challenge you this week to do something that you’ve always wanted to do or admired someone else doing, but have always been too scared to do. I was inspired by Taylor Swift in one of her new videos.

Here are a list of things you could choose to do, if you find yourself lacking inspiration:

-wear a cardigan instead of a sweatshirt

-wear a pair of high heels

-wear a color you don’t often choose, perhaps something metallic

-wear a bold piece of jewelry

-buy some skinny jeans…and WEAR them!

-wear a blazer

-cut your hair shorter or get bangs (duh.)

-wear a dress/skirt a different length than you are used to (like a maxi dress or a mini skirt)

-wear a belt at your waist

-get highlights or dye your hair a different color

-wear ankle boots

-learn how to put your hair in a new hairstyle

-wear cowboy boots with shorts

-get a spray tan (Check out Raving Tans if you are in the area. Heather is the best!)

-wear bright pink or red lipstick

-wear fun color tights

Comment and let me know what you plan on doing. Let’s change TOGETHER!!

What Not To Wear

In the past, I have made some not so smart fashion decisions. I’d like to share the things I’ve learned with you, so that you can NOT make the mistakes I’ve made. I definitely hung my head in shame and laughed at myself as I looked back at these awful pictures. You live and learn. I wonder what I’m doing now that will mortify me in the future.

What was I thinking?!! Oh, sweet, gullible 9th grader. Why did no one set you straight and give you some advice? This fashion no-no should be left to European tourists.

This dress I wore to my freshman Homecoming dance was sooooo bad (although my mother still strongly disagrees) that the boy I danced with that night, still remembered it in detail our senior year…and not in a good way. Yikes.

I’m seriously considering pressing charges against my mother for letting me out of the house like this. Yuck. Sweats should only be for lounging around the house and working out. And construction boots are for construction workers and you don’t see me building any houses, so I have no idea why I owned them. Epic fail.

There is a fine line between fashionable and ultra-slutty when it comes to wearing a mini dress. More often than not, I think people’s mini dresses veer towards the latter. Fortunately this dress was a costume I wore in a show and nothing I CHOSE to wear, so you can’t blame me for this one or call me any names. ;)

Let’s just leave these shirts to retired men over the age of 65. I guess it totally figures that I borrowed this shirt from my dad.

I don’t care if this trend is coming back in style, I will never agree with it. I think it is inappropriate to show off your belly, even if you are five years old or have a rockin’ killer model body. Bleh. Oh, and did you notice that I was sporting mom jeans? Double gross.

Turtlenecks are…okay, but then to go and pair them with overalls?! In fact, if you still own any overalls and you’re not a farmer, go ahead and burn them. Looking back at my photo album from high school, in about 85% of the pictures, I was wearing overalls. Boy, was I clueless.

I am the biggest advocate for color, but too much of a good thing is…too much. Also, someone should have warned me about mixing my patterns. Ha!

And don’t forget, no one looks good with a sunburn, so always remember to wear sunscreen. :)

Here’s what I wore this week:

Real Talk

For the past week, I have been exhausted. Not the kind of tired caused by staying up too late (although I did that too), but the kind of tired that makes Rip Van Winkle’s sleep super appealing (a fifty-year nap-oh yeah!). It’s super annoying because I feel like I have no energy to do anything.

Unfortunately, my personality and my life doesn’t let me stop, so I keep doing my normal daily routine, but with my eyelids half shut. Or one eye open and the other closed.

Luckily enough, shopping is one of my “daily routines” (much to my husband’s displeasure), so they haven’t forgotten my name at the local Goodwill. ;)

Here are a list of my favorite places to shop:

Plato’s Closet-Duh. This store is amazing, but warning, you find such good deals and great stuff that you might end up buying more than you planned.

Ross-I go more for the shoe section than the clothes. I find that the Vista one (if you’re local) is better than either Escondido ones.

Goodwill-The Escondido one is two stories and the second story is their “boutique”. Honestly, I think they just call the upstairs that so they can justify charging a bit more, but there are still insanely amazing finds (H&M leather jacket for only $20!) on both floors and none of their prices could be considered expensive.

La Tienda Thrift Store-This two-story thrift store in San Clemente is my absolute favorite. I seriously make the forty-five mile trip JUST to shop at that store. They sell furniture, home stuff and lots of clothes. One time I found two pairs of Rainbow sandals in excellent condition for $2 each!!

Poway Thrift Stores-There is a strip mall full of great thrift stores (off Poway Road, just past Carriage Rd) that range from sorta junky to vintage/antiques. Totally worth checking out, especially if you have time just to mill around.

Thrifty Threads-This resale store in Encinitas is small, but packed full of trendy finds. Make sure to bring cash because they don’t take cards.

Target-I love to scour through their clearance sections, especially when I was buying maternity clothes. If I find something I like at full-price, I wait patiently for it to make its way to the discounted rows. I also subscribe to “Target Daily Deals” (totally free!) and have gotten a lot of cool, on sale things shipped free to my house.

Old Navy-I usually shop online, which is sooooo dangerous. It’s easier to stalk things online and wait for them to go on sale. I love just about anything from this store.

Lands End Canvas-This is the younger division of Lands End. They have really cute things, similar to JCrew and once discounted are not too expensive. Also, if you sign up for emails, they will send you extra coupons/discounts.

I realize a couple of these stores are only for local San Diegans, but I suggest that you explore the area you live in for great little resale/thrift/consignment stores. If you find one you like, go ahead and ask the owner what stores they like because I’m 95% sure they will have an opinion. And don’t forget to continually return to that store because resale stores are constantly restocking, so consistency is key. Most of all, have fun and make every shopping trip an adventure!

Happy Friday!

Spring Break & An Ode to My Cousin

This week I’ve been on spring break, which means my brain is on a completely different schedule. All week, I’ve had completely no idea what day it is. Thank goodness for the calendar on my iPhone dinging me and reminding me that I have things to get done, etc. Fortunately, I remembered enough to take pictures of my outfits, although I forgot a couple days. You can tell that I wore jeans a whole lot more than normal. My focus was being comfy, lazy and hanging with my kids.

When I was growing up, I never went clothes shopping. I grew up with six older girl cousins, who lived not far from me, so I always got to wear their hand-me-downs. Thankfully their fashion taste wasn’t completely awful, so I didn’t mind too much. I still LOVE getting hand-me-downs and making a used piece my own.

My cousin, Emily, is two years older than I am. When we were younger, I idolized her. She seriously could do no wrong in my eyes, except that she wanted nothing to do with me (but isn’t that always how it is with younger cousins/siblings?!). Emily was super interested in fashion/beauty, which no one else in my family cared much about. She was the only one I knew that got giddy over clothes, like me. She had her own style and could make anything work.

Now that we are in the same stage of life -both mothers of younger children, home owners, working moms- we have become great friends. I am so thankful for Emily’s lead in not saying, “Oh, I don’t think I could wear that”, but making anything work regardless of what people would say. She completely OWNS an outfit and always looks put together. We thrift store shop together and enjoy making possible outfits out of the clothes that we find. Emily has a completely different style than I do, but I LOVE her artistic eye and confidence.

This post is my giant thank you letter to Emily for unknowingly guiding me to find my own style and giving me the confidence to take care of myself (she’s a size 0!) and care about what I look like, no matter how tired or overwhelmed by life I am. She is an eBay master shopper & I still LOVE getting her hand-me-downs (especially on the rare occasion when they fit me!). Such a beautiful person, inside & out and I am so happy to call her my cousin AND friend. Love you, Emily.

Who is your inspiration?

This was my Easter dress. Check below for the great deal I got on it.

Proof that those amazing deals are out there! Brand new with tags still on! I was extremely stoked it was in my size!!!

Happy Friday!

CLOSET ALL-STARS

The next 10 items are the most versatile and essential items I have in my closet. They help complete all of my outfits and are easy to pair with each other.

1. A Comfortable Pair of Boots-I have more boots than I should, but boots make an outfit immediately look pulled together and are a perfect accessory to short, flowy dresses and skirts AND skinny jeans.

2. Scarves In Bright Colors-There are soooo many different ways to tie scarves and the bright color that close to your face helps you to look more awake because it brightens your eyes.

3. Long, Gold Necklaces-I prefer gold over silver and I love the longer length because it looks good with all necklines.

4. Skinny Jeans-Find a good pair that fits you well. You can pair these with boots, flats or sandals in the summer.

5. Leather Jacket-The leather jacket is so versatile and can make your outfit look classic or rocker chic in seconds. It is the perfect alternative to a cardigan.

6. Metallic Flats-I truly believe that metallic is the new black. The colors gold, silver, bronze and pewter go with everything and your toes will feel nice and pretty. ;)

7. Pearls-I’m pretty sure you could wear a potato sack and have pearls on and you would look pulled together. Pearls have a magical ability to make any outfit feminine and beautiful.

8. Waist Belt-A good solid belt in brown or black is perfect for nipping in a dress, shirt or cardigan and giving you a slender, hourglass figure.

9. Jean Skirt-If I feel frumpy, I’ll turn to my jean skirts, instead of jeans because it’s comfortable, but still dressy. Plus they are denim, so they go with EVERYTHING.

10. Dresses-I think dresses are the best thing for covering up any “chubby” areas you might not be too happy about. Make sure to buy ones that fit you well and are comfortable. The brighter the color the better.

(This last picture was taken by Liam, so he immediately wanted me to take a picture of him to put on the blog. Check out his pose.)

March 29, 2012

Most pregnant women get nauseous and sick. I, on the other hand, became a zombie. I was exhausted, to the point where I could have been mistaken for a narcoleptic. I wanted to (and did) lay down on any surface and close my eyes. This included the floor of the church sanctuary, my car on lunch breaks and sometimes even the random chair left in the handicapped bathroom stall. You have to understand, I am not the kind of person who naps, so this was a whole new experience.

Because I was exhausted, I could have gone to work in my pajamas for all I cared. But I did care and wanted to look nice. So, I came up with a solution. In those rare moments when I DID have energy, I gathered up my new maternity wardrobe and put outfits together.

I set out shirts I thought would go together with certain skirts, shoes and jewelry and took pictures of them. Then I uploaded them to my iPhoto and made a “Maternity Outfits” album. This was a super helpful reference to figure out what I wanted to wear when I woke up in the morning and my brain wasn’t functioning normally.

I’ve continued this with my standard wardrobe, since I’ve discovered that working and having two children can make me almost as tired as I was in the first trimester. I also take pictures of myself when I really like my outfits (hence the idea for “Fashion Friday”), so I’ll remember to repeat them at some point.

Because, let’s be real, wouldn’t we all like to go to work dressed like this? ;)

My cousin got married this weekend!

This is what you wear to attack a swap meet.

Happy Friday!

March 23, 2012

Confession: I am obsessed with the word “totes”, short for “totally”. I realize it is equal parts awesome and ridiculous, but I can’t stop saying it. Does anyone else have this problem?! Something equally addicting is thrift store shopping. If you’ve never been thrift store or consignment/resale shopping, I really recommend it. I will warn you that your hands will feel dirty and gross afterwards, but the treasures you find will be totally worth it. People have told me that they don’t like wearing things that are used, but I like to think of them as “previously loved”. ;)

Here are some tips to think about:

1. If possible, wear specific clothing to go shopping.

-Not all thrift stores have dressing rooms, so sometimes it is a good idea to wear clothing that will be easy to try clothes on over. A neutral colored tank top works well to try on sweaters and shirts, a skirt to try pants on under and slip-on shoes that are easy to take on and off. Unfortunately you most likely won’t be able to return items, so it is important to know it fits you really well before you purchase.

2.When you go in, start in the area of the item you most desire.

-Depending on the size of the thrift store, you might not get to everything. That’s why it’s a good idea to start with the item of clothing you would most like to purchase (shirts, dresses, etc.).

3. Go in with an open mind, not something specific.

-I’ve always heard that the higher your expectations, the more likely you will be disappointed. It’s highly unlikely that if you are looking for a “forest green cardigan from GAP with 3/4 length sleeves” that you will find it. Instead, just look through the cardigans and hope to find something else that might fit in your wardrobe. You also might be surprised with the amount of things that you find that you WEREN’T looking for. So, being ready for anything is your best best.

4. Look through the clothes quickly.

-Because you probably have a lot of ground to cover, it’s best if you skim the clothes quickly by looking at the fabric and colors and only stopping when you see something that pleases you.

5. Don’t be afraid to try on sizes that aren’t yours.

-Because most of these clothes have been owned before, there is the chance that the item has been shrunk or stretched out, so feel free to try on sizes that are close to your size. I am a size 12, but have clothes that are size 10 and size 14. This could also have a lot to do with the manufacturers not having consistent sizing. If you hold it up to yourself in the store and it looks like it would fit, go ahead and try it on. This also applies to shoes. In my wardrobe, I have shoes from 7 1/2 to 9. Just make sure to TRY IT ON!

6. Stick with brand names.

-I wouldn’t consider myself a “label whore”, but when I come across something in a thrift store that I like, I ALWAYS look at the tag. This gives me an idea of what size it should be to fit me, what the fabric is made out of and how well it is made. Get to know your brands as far as ones that might come from Ross, Target, Gap, Old Navy or Nordstrom because you are most likely to encounter these. This is not to say that if you find something that doesn’t have a brand on it, don’t get it, but just be wary of the way it is made. I have found some cool, possibly homemade things before. In this instance, judge how the fabric feels and how it fits you.

7. Look for wear and tear & be honest about whether you would wear it a lot.

-Look the item over carefully for any rips, snags or material that looks like it could pill easily. Depending on the wear and tear will help you decide how much you like it and if you want to keep it. Also, make sure that it’s something that you would wear often and be a good addition to your wardrobe. Don’t just buy it because it is a good deal. It is helpful to shop with a friend in these instances to give you honest opinions about your purchases. It is also a good idea to check the tag for the care of an item, such as if it needs to be dry-cleaned.

8. Know what works on your body type.

-If you know that you look horrible in pencil skirts or cropped jackets, it’s probably not a good use of your time to bother trying it on. Go ahead and skip these items. If it’s an item you are unsure of, it could be a good idea to try it on because you could be surprised to find a new style that works for your body. Don’t bother with items that don’t fit you really well or aren’t comfortable.

9. Think about how you could accessorize or fit the item into your wardrobe.

-While I shop, I hold items up and make outfits with them in my head. If I see a pretty cowl neck sweater, I think “this would look great with a denim skirt and knee-high boots”. This will help you decide whether or not to purchase an item.

10. Don’t get discouraged, be consistent.

-Thrift store shopping is hit or miss, so some shopping trips might be seem like failures. But there will be those amazing finds that you get, that will make the search totally worth it. When you do start finding a lot of great deals, beware it’ll get super addicting! You will want to go all the time to see what you can find.

Some other tips include: taking cash with you, checking store hours before you head out, since thrift/consignment store hours aren’t always the same as normal stores.

With this next outfit, I really wanted to wear my red tights with this dress, but the “dress” ended up being too short to wear to work. Thankfully, I found an alternative I liked just as much and was more modest AND comfortable.

Happy Friday!

March 16, 2012

I am a designer lovin’, label seeking, penny pincher.

I’ve always been a sucker for deals and low prices. It’s genetic and runs deep in my blood. I got the deal-hunting gene from my mom, who got it from her mom, who I’m sure got it from her mom and so on. In fact, my best friend made me so proud a couple weeks ago. She found a dress she really liked, but complained that it was “Sixteen dollars!?!”

Don’t get me wrong, I get my JCrew catalog and greatly appreciate everything in Anthropologie, but I would never buy anything from them. I don’t think it’s physically possible for me to spend that much money on an item. My deal hunting ways are so bad that when I go to already low priced stores like Target or Old Navy, I go straight to the clearance sections and that’s it. I believe if you really want something, just stalk it until it goes on sale. I’ve gotten spoiled from getting such great deals that it’s not worth it to me to pay full price.

A couple years back, I was at Plato’s Closet (best store ever for cheap fashion nuts) and found some adorable red leather Marc Jacob flats for 10!!!!!! I ran them up to the check-out counter and exclaimed to the salesgirl, “Marc Jacobs for only $10?!!” She looked at me as if I was speaking Chinese. I walked out feeling like I had won the shoe lottery. They were half a size too small, but I made them work. I was just super grateful that no one, especially that designer-naive sales girl, had scooped them up before me.

I’ve decided to start “Fashion Friday” because I LOVE putting outfits together. I believe in quantity in my closet over quality. More outfit choices suits my ADD need for constant change. Since I am a working mom, I try my best to look not only presentable, but cute as well. Sometimes it’s trial and error, hit or miss, but I thought it’d be fun to post pictures of my outfits throughout the week. In coming posts, I’m going to post tips about:

-shopping for clothes at thrift stores

-accessorizing

-finding your own style

-dressing cute even when you don’t feel like it

and

-random thoughts from Rena :)

Feel free to comment/ask questions and I’ll do my best to get back to you. Happy first “Fashion Friday”!
